Funded PhD Programme (UK Students Only)

About the Programme

Leeds School of Arts at Leeds Beckett University is offering four fully funded doctoral studentships (stipend + fees) and three doctoral fee waivers commencing in October 2023.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidates to undertake original, ground breaking research work within a thriving creative arts environment. These are funded studentship and as a PhD candidate you will be part of a vibrant team within Leeds School of Arts, joining a growing research community with interests across creative arts practice. Our research profile can be viewed at: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/research/larc/

The fully-funded studentships will be in the following areas:

  • Art and Design (experimental cross-disciplinary projects are encouraged from areas such as fashion, graphic design, architecture and fine art, and disciplines from outside of the arts) X 2
  • Music and Sound or Performing Arts
  • Film-making (this is a special opportunity to work in collaboration with the Northern Film School and the Obesity Institute at Leeds Beckett to use film-making to create new and positive narratives around obesity with a view to changing public perceptions).

The three fee waivers will be in Architecture, Urban Design, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture.

Proposals that combine disciplines are welcome.

Projects that investigate issues relating to equality, diversity and inclusion are strongly encouraged.

How to Apply

The fully-funded studentships are available as a 3 year full-time PhD study programme with expected start date of 02 October 2023.

Candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Simon Morris (for art and design) or Professor Robert Shail (Music and Sound; Performing Arts; Filmmaking) before applying.

Candidates for the fee waivers are encouraged to contact Professor Renée Tobe ().

Applicants are required to provide a detailed research proposal as part of the application process. Guidance on Writing a PhD Research Proposal and details of the application form are available on Leeds Beckett University's Graduate School website.

Candidates should have a minimum of a first degree (2:1 or higher) and ideally a Masters degree. Experience of professional creative practice will be considered in place of a Masters degree. We strongly encourage applications from professional arts practitioners.

Applicants shortlisted for the PhD studentships will be contacted for an interview within four weeks from the closing date. The closing date for applications is Friday, 23 June 2023.

Funding Notes

The fully-funded studentships are worth at least £22,168 per year for three years. The studentship covers payment of tuition fees (£4,500) plus an annual stipend of £17,688. The three fee waiver tuition only scholarships cover the full-time Leeds Beckett PhD fee. Please note that the scheme is only open to Home/RUK students.
