About the Programme

The Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK is a leading academic institution for research and teaching about Islam and Muslims in Britain.

We have 1 International PhD Jameel Scholarship and 2 UK PhD Jameel Scholarships in British Muslim Studies available for suitably qualified students with an innovative and significant PhD proposal.

The PhD is based at the School of History, Archaeology and Religion and supervised by the Islam-UK Centre at Cardiff University.

We are seeking exceptional applicants with a First Class or high Upper Second Class Honours Degree or Masters Degree (or equivalent). 

Research proposals are invited on topics that clearly align with the research interests and expertise of staff at the Islam-UK Centre. Proposals must demonstrate exceptional academic merit, potential and relevance to Muslims in the UK.

Relevant areas of research interest include: 

  • Islam and Public Life
  • Islam in Prison and Rehabilitation
  • Muslim Religious Professionals including Chaplaincy and Imams 
  • Mental Health and Islam
  • Pastoral Care and Pastoral Theology
  • Imams and Religious Leadership
  • Islamic Law in Britain
  • Religious Authority, Revival Movements, Tradition, and Modernity in Britain
  • Islam and Muslims in Wales, British Muslim History
  • Socio-economic inequality amongst British Muslims
  • Mixed methods research research
  • Muslim Women and Islam
  • Islam and the Media

The scholarship is funded by the Jameel Foundation.

How to Apply

Please note applicants must apply for a PhD place directly with Cardiff University via this link (Religious and Theological Studies - Study - Cardiff University) and also apply for the scholarship via this form ( Only applicants who have made both applications can be considered.

Criteria for PhD eligibility: 

  1. First or upper second degree OR a masters from an internationally recognised academic research organisation. Degree qualifications gained from outside the UK, or a combination of qualifications and/or experience that is equivalent to a relevant UK degree, may be accepted.
  2. Applicants whose first language is not English will be expected to provide evidence of English proficiency. 

IELTS exam results showing an overall grade of 6.5 or above are acceptable for this programme, with a minimum of 5.5 in each sub score.

If you have obtained a full bachelor or higher degree which has been taught through the medium of English and awarded by a UK institution or you have obtained a full bachelor or higher degree which has been taught (in its entirety) in a country on the UKVI list of exceptions (excluding Canada) or you are a national of Canada and have obtained a full bachelor or higher degree which has been taught (in its entirety) in Canada and awarded by a Canadian institution.

If you are a national of, and have the equivalent of a pass in a High School qualification from, a majority English speaking country on the UKVI list of exceptions, including Canada.

Criteria for PhD Scholarship:

  1. Those applying for a PhD scholarship should have, or be studying for, a Master’s degree or similar postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, Social Sciences, Philosophy or History) from a UK-recognised university. In exceptional circumstances, applicants with only a BA degree will be considered.
  2. Full awards are open only to international students who satisfy UK residency requirements
  3. Familiarity with, and/or proven competence in, the use of qualitative research methods and associated data analysis techniques at postgraduate level
  4. Demonstrable record of interest in, and/or enthusiasm for, working with British Muslims
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills
  6. Willingness to attend all Islam-UK Centre activities and events (e.g. weekly Spring Semester Public Lecture Series) and to undertake some voluntary work with local Muslim communities in South Wales

Research proposals must demonstrate very high academic standards, align closely with the research interests of the Islam-UK Centre staff, and at least one of the following:

  • Potential social policy significance
  • Potential creation of an evidence-base that might inform changes and developments within or for British Muslim communities
  • Potential to promote better understanding of Islam and Muslim communities in Britain and in wider society
  • Scope for capacity-building amongst those who work with, or for, Muslims in Britain
