Profile Description

Health and illness are more than medical matters.

The Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine is a unique interdisciplinary social science department working in collaboration with biomedical researchers and clinicians. We seek to understand the social determinants of health, illness and ageing, and the way in which advances in biomedicine and biotechnology are changing the nature of medical practice and conceptions of health and illness. Research in the Department  (established January 2012) focuses on the social, political, economic, legal and ethical factors shaping developments in biomedicine, disease and healthcare and their implications. Our Department also incorporates the Institute of Gerontology, one of the leading gerontological research and teaching centres worldwide. Founded in 1986, the Institute is at the vanguard of multi-disciplinary research and teaching, acting as a bridge between the social and clinical sciences. We welcome applications for prospective students which relate to our current research priorities;

Global health inequalities;
• Ageing policy, health & healthcare
• Bioeconomies and commercial and economic factors in medical developments and health care;

• Biomedicine, bioscience and society;
• Communities, work & family life;
• Developments in health and medical technologies, social science and aging;
• Global ageing
• Health policy and health economics;
• Mental health, psychiatry and neuroscience;
• The problems of translational research;
• The definition and measurement of health and social outcomes by governments, insurers, professionals and patients.
