Oxford's Department of Sociology seeks to admit the best graduate students from all over the world. They join a community of about a hundred students who enjoy first-class facilities for studying as well as the opportunity to advance the leading edge of the discipline. Each year about thirty students enter our MSc and MPhil programmes, which provide the theoretical and methodological foundations for advanced research. Sixty students are currently engaged in the DPhil (PhD) programme. Many of our students come from the United Kingdom and other European countries; we also attract students from all over the world, from Australia and Italy to Chile and China which makes for a diverse student culture and a vibrant learning environment. We prepare students for academic careers, but we also celebrate the substantial number of our graduates working in government, in think-tanks, and in the private sector.
Sociology at Oxford has a strong analytical, empirical and comparative orientation. Focus is on developing and testing theories that engage with real world problems. Rigorous empirical methods are central to Oxford sociology, whether it concerns survey research, experiments or ethnographical studies. The international reputation of Oxford Sociology is widely recognised. Sociology is currently ranked third in the world (and first in Europe) according to QS Rankings by Subject 2017.
DPhil (PhD) in Sociology
The DPhil is Oxford's PhD in Sociology. It is a full-time, three year programme of doctoral study for students who would like to undertake original and independent research in preparation for an academic career and other research-intense jobs.
Applicants are expected have achieved a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours in sociology or a related social science discipline. A master's degree with a high pass (2.1) or distinction is also required.
Two Fully Funded Studentships
Applications are invited for two fully funded 3 year PhD (DPhil) studentship based in the Department of Sociology to begin in October 2017. These studentships are available on Professor Christiaan Monden's ERC funded project on Family Size and Social Inequalities (FAMSIZEMATTERS).
The successful studentship applicants will be part of the ERC funded project FAMSIZEMATTERS, which studies questions about how family size affects the (re)production of social inequalities. This project team is led by Prof. Christiaan Monden and consists of a number of post-doctoral researchers and research assistants. The project sits at the intersection between Sociology and Demography. The geographic focus is Europe and East Asia, though not all sub-projects have a comparative component.
The PhD theses of the successful studentship applicants will focus on a particular sub-project within the larger project. Possible subject-matter of the two studentships: only-children and socioeconomic inequalities; childlessness and socioeconomic inequalities; impact of children's socioeconomic position on their parents' well-being; high-fertility sub-populations in low fertility societies; and family size and gender inequality.
