Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law

The Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law is a thriving community of students and academics. Colleagues in the School undertake research across a wide range of areas. Successful candidates will work with an experienced, forward-thinking supervisory team and join a strong existing cohort of doctoral students. They will participate in research and training activities embedded in our research centres and groups.

These are (with relevant contacts):

  • Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law Research (IISTL) – Professor Baris Soyer
  • Observatory on Human Rights of Children – Professor Simon Hoffman, Professor Jane Williams or Dr Anthony Charles
  • Cyber Threats Research Centre – Professor Stuart MacDonald
  • Governance and Human Rights Research Group – Dr Tom Hannant and Dr Victoria Jenkins

We would particularly welcome applications in these areas but will be happy to consider applications in other areas in which our staff have research interests – see the Directory of Expertise at  Postgraduate Research Programmes - Swansea University and Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law Staff - Swansea University.

Project supervisors

All applicants should note that the faculty will assess their supervisory capacity for individual applicants at the shortlisting stage of the recruitment process. The formal offer of a scholarship place to successful applicants is contingent on relevant supervisor capacity and experience having first been confirmed by staff internally.

Informal scholarship enquiries from applicants to prospective supervisors – prior to the application deadline – are warmly encouraged; please direct these to the relevant member/s of faculty staff.

Eligibility

Candidates must have attained, or must be expected to attain, a strong 2:1 or a first-class honours degree and/or a distinction at master’s level.

Where applicants have multiple master’s degrees, a distinction must be held in the degree that is most relevant to the intended PhD study.

English Language requirements: If applicable – IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.5 in each individual component) or Swansea recognised equivalent. Details on the Swansea University English Language entry policy can be found here.

Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship is open to applicants eligible to pay tuition fees at the UK rate only, as defined by UKCISA regulations.

Applicants must be able to begin their course of study in July 2023. As a cohort-based programme, deferral to an alternative enrolment window within the academic year or to another academic year is not permissible.

Please note that both the degree and language-proficiency entry requirements for these scholarships are higher than the baseline standard for entry that is stipulated for most of the PhD programmes at Swansea University.

NB: If you are holding a non-UK degree, please see Swansea University degree comparisons to find out if you meet the eligibility.

If you have any questions regarding your academic or fee eligibility based on the above, please email pgrscholarships@swansea.ac.uk with the web-link to the scholarship(s) you are interested in.
