Housed in the iconic Wills Memorial Building, the Law School represents a unique blend of tradition and innovation, offering an educational experience which challenges and empowers students and a research and scholarship environment in which academic originality and excellence flourish.

Bristol has frequently been declared one of the best UK cities to live in, including by The Sunday Times (March 2015).

The PhD Programme

The University of Bristol Law School gives a high priority to the development of a thriving postgraduate research culture. We are keen to attract the next generation of legal scholars and to encourage original research. Many of our PhD students work across disciplines, and we have excellent connections for co-supervision throughout the University.

The Bristol Doctoral College, offers research training to support all postgraduate research students at all stages of their work. Opportunities to access training are also available as part of the South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC). The SWDTC allows students to network with staff and students and provides training in generic, advanced and transferable skills. In the Law School we also help our students study research methods and design as well as theoretical or contextual perspectives, wherever relevant.

Bristol has a vibrant and inclusive research community producing doctoral graduates with outstanding skills and excellent job prospects. We value our research students and recognise the important contribution they make, including in our research centres and student-led research seminars and events.

Students have dedicated PhD study spaces and computers within the Law School, as well as access to excellent libraries and drop in study spaces. We offer opportunities for teaching on our LLB programme as well as elsewhere in the University. We have a strong support network for our students, with generous funding for conference attendance and event organisation. We aim to produce fully-rounded legal scholars, well equipped for research, teaching, impact and engagement.

We offer both full and part-time PhD study. The PhD programme can be studied full-time over three years or part-time over six years.
