Scholarship summary
A three-year doctoral studentship is available for candidates who wish to explore the history of the consumption and control of substances labelled as narcotics and intoxicants in the Philippines in the first half of the twentieth-century. It is one of four studentships included in the ‘The Asian Cocaine Crisis: Pharmaceuticals, consumers and control in Asia, c. 1900-1945' project funded by the Wellcome Trust with Professor James Mills of The Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare (CSHHH) Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde as Principal Investigator.
The successful candidate will enjoy resources to travel to archives, to project meetings in China, in India and in the UK and also to conferences around the world. The student will join the thriving postgraduate community at the CSHHH Glasgow, will be a full member of the Graduate School in Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Strathclyde, and will be integrated into a project team that includes partners in Shanghai, Bangalore, Leiden and Washington.

• Be able to write in academic English (IELTS minimum overall band score of 6.5, with no individual test score below 5.5)
