The Faculty of Social Sciences is offering two PhD studentships for prospective candidates with a research interest in the area of Widening Participation in Higher Education.

The Office for Fair Access is the independent regulator of fair access to higher education in England with the mission to ensure that “everyone with the potential and ambition to succeed in higher education should have equal opportunity to do so, whatever their income or background”.
UEA commits, through the submission of an Access Agreement, to spending a proportion of additional fee income to enhance access to HE and support the success and progression of Undergraduate Home students from widening participation (WP) backgrounds.
Current research activity at the University seeks to build a strong knowledge base and understanding of WP in an educational context including motivators and barriers to success. This includes a series of systematic reviews being conducted by the School of Education and Lifelong Learning to consolidate knowledge about the impact of financial support on WP and effective academic and curriculum based support approaches for WP students.
Two Widening Participation studentships are intended to marry the research interests of individual PhD applicants with the areas of WP research that the University requires to inform the impact and effectiveness of its WP activity. Applications are invited in the area of Widening Participation research and particularly for projects under the following topics:
• Literacy and Numeracy Skills Among A-level and Non-A level Students and Higher Education Attainment
• The Efficacy of Universities in Raising Aspiration and Attainment in Schools
• Universities as Engines of Social Mobility: Pathways to Graduate Employment among Disadvantaged Students
• Widening Participation in Higher Education and Local Economic Development
• Learning Technology and Support for Disadvantaged Students in Higher Education
• The Efficacy of Universities use of Contextual Admissions to Broaden Access to HE

Applications for these studentships are invited from suitably qualified graduates. Candidates should typically hold a first degree with a minimum of 2:1 and a Master's degree with research methods training appropriate to the discipline, with a dissertation mark of at least 65%. Candidates applying for a 1+3 studentship should hold a relevant undergraduate degree. Candidates who have studied outside of the UK should typically hold qualifications at an equivalent level to those mentioned above. Candidates will be interviewed as part of the selection process. EU applicants may be required to provide evidence of competence in the English Language.
