About the Project

Applicants are invited to apply for a fully funded PhD programme to investigate additive manufacturing of micro-structures for high frequency RF applications.

3D printing has flourished in the past decade due to the advancements and accessibility of additive manufacturing processes and materials. The technologies have demonstrated the ability to create complex structures with a variety of materials. Radio frequency applications have begun to show benefits when created by these manufacturing approaches. However, due to the limitations in the minimum feature sizes that could be achieved, 3D printing has operated at limited frequencies. The aim of this project is to investigate alternative processes and materials to enable the effective creation of minimum feature sizes which allow for the manipulation of RF at high frequencies. 

The candidate must have a strong physics or engineering background with good knowledge in the field of additive manufacturing or RF applications. An understanding of material properties characterisation is desirable. The willingness to attain experience in 3D printing processes and RF applications is also expected. 

The successful candidate will join the Future Manufacturing Processes Research Group (FMP) at the University of Leeds. FMP is a world leading research group in developing innovative manufacturing processes with interdisciplinary researchers and industrial partners, and developing bespoke instruments.

Funding Notes

A highly competitive School of Mechanical Engineering Studentship consisting of the award of fees at the UK fee rate, together with a maintenance grant of £16,062 in session 2022/23 for 3.5 years. This opportunity is open to UK applicants only.  All candidates will be placed into the School of Mechanical Engineering Studentship Competition and selection is based on academic merit.
