About the Project

Closing Date: Open until filled
Department: GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratories for Sustainable Chemistry (School of Chemistry)

Supervisors: Professors Hon Wai Lam and Simon Woodward
Subject area: Organic chemistry/synthesis and biological chemistry
Start date: October 2020

Research Description
As part of an active EPSRC Prosperity Partnership Programme, involving a collaboration between GlaxoSmithKline and the Universities of Nottingham and Strathclyde, we are offering a 48-month PhD studentship in the development of advanced methodology for the rapid and efficient synthesis of molecular fragments relevant to the pharmaceutical and related industries.

This project will involve the development of advanced (including asymmetric) catalysis and synthesis and will be supervised by Professors Hon Wai Lam and Simon Woodward. It will take place in the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory at the University of Nottingham, and will involve collaboration with scientists at GlaxoSmithKline and the University of Strathclyde.

This studentship is available in October 2020, funded through a stipend covering PhD tuition fees (at the Home/EU rate) and a tax-free living allowance (currently £15,009 per annum, increasing annually), pro-rata for part-time study. The student will gain expertise in organic synthesis and catalysis, and acquire skills in problem solving, spectroscopic analysis and scientific communication. How to Apply
Applications are invited from outstanding EU/UK students holding a good undergraduate degree and Masters-level qualification in Chemistry. You will have experience in conducting original research in organic synthesis/biological chemistry. In the first instance, please send a cover letter and CV to both: [Email Address Removed] and [Email Address Removed]
