About the Project

4D printing has been introduced as a novel manufacturing technique where additive manufacturing is being used to create 3D object that deliver an extra functionality such as changing shape when exposed to external stimuli such as temperature. The aim of this project is to utilise 4D printing technology to develop 3D smart ceramic structures that has the capability to self-heal, change colour and/or mechanical properties when subject to external mechanical or thermal loading. The project will include development of formulation (ceramic as well as healing additives), process optimisation, microstructure characterisation, mechanical testing as well as testing of developed demonstrators.

Funding Notes

The project is partially funded by the School of Engineering, University of Birmingham. For UK/EU students, the scholarship provides around £14500 stipend and complete tuition fees per annum for three years. For overseas students, the Scholarship will cover the tuition fees only.
