About the Project

Wet gas is any gas with a small amount of liquid present. Wet gas flow metering is becoming increasingly important in many industrial sectors, like oil and gas. Many single phase meter could be employed to accurately measure dry gas, however the presence of even a small amount of liquid load in the fluid has significant effects on the flow conditions and cause troublesome over-reading. The degree of over-reading depends on the liquid volume fraction, the static pressure, the gas and liquid densities and the velocity. There are many empirical models to correct over-reading, however, the problem is one individual model is quite often only suitable for a small range of flow condition. A more general and straightforward approach is demanded for wet gas metering.

Normally one single flow meter can measure one type of flow information. A couple of different flow meters along the wet gas flow loop could deliver multiple and independent flow parameters, such gas void fraction, gas flow rate, liquid velocity and liquid flow rate. These flow parameters could cross validate each other, and could be integrated together to develop a new model to unfold more information related to complex wet gas flow.

Wet steam is one type of wet gas. Huge amounts of steam are routinely produced by industry in general and it has been estimated that approximately 50% of the energy consumed by industry is for the generation of steam. Therefore, the ability to accurately measure the amount of steam can be extremely critical to account for costs. The wet gas metering solution developed in the first stage for wet gas will be extended for wet steam flow.

A large number of experiment data acquired from recent lab-scale wet gas flow and wet steam flow are available for this study. The benchmark data of gas and liquid single phase flow are available as well to validate the accuracy of data fusion model and metering solution developed in this project.
