A Photographic Study Considering the Politics of Race, Representation and Identity is a reaction to one’s identity and social position within society. ‘Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law’ (Article 6 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights). The traumatic effects of migration, the #metoo movement and post-George Floyd challenges us to be critical visual recorders of life. ‘Now more than ever, the application of photography has to be forensic. It’s more a case of “How we see?” and “What we see?” and “What we bring to the fore?”’ (Sealy 2022).
Research questions should focus upon considerations of lived/shared experience, your heritage, or your place in society, such as what defines home, restricted borders, the transition (displacement) of land and landscape? Your research focus may consider issues such as displaced migrants without material means or issues of losing and regaining one’s identity, shifting identities, and/or literature from another language. Your research will engage with ideas addressing what is our compassion, agency, and civil responsibility to bridge these differences?
‘The photograph is a platform upon which traces from the encounter between those present in the situation of photography are inscribed’ (Azoulay 2012). So, what are the ‘power relations between photographer, camera, and photographed person’ (Azoulay 2012)?
Your practice-based PhD will present new perspectives considering questions of Race, Identity, Black, Brown or White racial systems, class, migration, and/or regionality. We are interested in new and innovative ways in which researchers engage through rigorous academic research. The focus will be on a substantial body of practice, accompanied by a considered form of researched documentation, as appropriate to the project, and a written component of critical thinking. The research is defined for example through the production of knowledge, artefacts, exhibitions, and experiences, consequently shared ‘in’ and ‘through’ your investigation in cultivating critical thinking in response to your question. Collectively, your supervisory team have established research profiles with national and international networks including organisations, artists and photographers to help support researchers within their proposed investigation.
The Artistic Research Centre at NTU is constituted by an interdisciplinary collegiate research environment with an ambition to continue to be at the forefront of innovation in artistic research processes. The Centre supports, both within and beyond the University, a breadth of investigations, networks, collaborators, sharing insights and interpretations in order to reflect a broad range of research activities, processes, and practices.
