About the Project

The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is seeking to attract a PhD candidate of outstanding ability and commitment to join its vibrant and growing programme of internationally excellent research. The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend (currently £15,609 per annum for three years) and payment of tuition fees (current value £4,500 per annum for 3 years). 

This project will investigate differences among the proton-proton, proton-neutron and neutron-neutron components of effective interaction between nucleons in nuclei with nearly spherical or deformed shapes.  It is an unsolved problem – how these interactions have an influence on energy levels, lifetime, and shape of a nucleus - that in turn helps one to understand the composition of our bodies from stardust and test fundamental particle symmetries.  To improve the present understanding of the interaction between nucleons, state-of-the-art techniques will be employed to measure the properties of nuclei at world-class laboratories such as ISOLDE-CERN (Geneva, Switzerland), JYFL (Jyvaskyla, Finland), GSI/FAIR (Darmstadt, Germany) and GANIL (Caen, France). 

The successful candidate will join the Nuclear Physics Research group of the University of the West of Scotland.  They will work within an international collaboration to develop radiation detectors, contribute to the development of complex setups, participate in experiments, and analyse the data towards publications.   Detector design work will involve the usage of the Monte-Carlo simulation toolkit Geant4.  Some knowledge of radiation detection, hands-on experience working with detectors, experience with C++ programming and Linux systems is desirable.

Candidates should hold a first- or second-class honours degree from a university in the United Kingdom in a relevant discipline.
