About the Project

As the decarbonisation of the energy progresses the community has come to be regarded as a key scale at which different technologies, e.g. batteries, EVs and solar PV, can interact to aid emission reduction. The adoption and use of these within community systems may be aided by allowing individual households, or members of the community, to trade available their energy in order to drive down costs.

This project will investigate the use of distributed energy resources, e.g. batteries and heat pumps, within a local energy system along with the development and assessment of different trading mechanisms that might be used between the members of the community. A key further consideration will be the interaction of this local system with the wider energy system to provide supporting services. The project will build on complexity based modelling approaches developed by Dr Brown’s group that will be used to reveal how these systems might be optimised and design equitably.
