Robert Gordon University, through the School of Engineering is offering a PhD studentship with tuition fees funded for Home/EU or International applicants.
This is a fees-only funded PhD studentship provided by the School of Engineering and interested candidates will have to secure their own financial support to upkeep their living costs.
The use of composite materials has significantly increased over the past few decades. Given the heterogenous nature of composites and the existence of multiple modes of failure, it is crucial to understand the failure phenomena to predict the remaining useful life of certain critical components such as wind turbine blades. This helps in decreasing the operational and maintenance costs. The use of Machine Learning (ML) has gained significant traction in all fields related to engineering to enable predictive maintenance. The suitability of this technique for composite failure prediction shall be investigated in this project.
The objective of the study is to quantitatively characterise the different failure phenomena in composites using an acoustic emission based on-line monitoring system. The effect of embedding the sensor within the composite during fabrication on the failure detection shall be understood and compared with a surface mounted case. Experimental and numerical simulation methods will be used to test the composite specimens in various loading conditions. The AE feature database corresponding to the composite failure modes shall then be used to create a failure prediction model using machine learning (Artificial Neural Networks) techniques. This study contributes towards building a “Digital Twin” of a wind turbine.

Applicants should have a First- or Second-Class UK honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline such Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Polymer Technology or Materials Science and Engineering. An MSc in a relevant subject is highly desirable. Knowledge or experience of polymer composites, signal processing and modelling & numerical simulations (FEA) is advantageous.
This studentship will cover the tuition fees only. Living costs and expenses are self-funded by the applicant.
