About This PhD Project

Project Description

The Project

This project develops previous theoretical work on responsive building envelopes by Dr. Shukla, PI of the proposed project. The proposed design incorporates many novel features, and its in-lab performance will be tested and evaluated. The basis of the proposed envelope system utilises a perforated metal profile attached to the exterior of a building, and an underlying layer of heat storage material separated by an air gap. Initial research and simulation suggests that total energy savings in the range of 30-50% can be achieved, depending upon the type of building and set point temperature used in UK buildings.

The proposed design operates close to ambient temperature, thus using solar and ambient energy to warm and cool the building envelope more efficiently by minimising losses. The design of the perforated metal profile will provide enough buoyancy force through a temperature gradient across the metal profile to move air through correctly positioned gaps at a very low velocity and so maximise the benefits of the system. The proposed building envelope has the potential to significantly reduce the thickness of insulation used in buildings.

Award Details: Tuition Fees + Bursary £15000 per year
Duration: 3 years Fixed Term (Studentships are available to commence during academic year 15/16- start date will be specified to successful candidates)

About the Centre/Department

The Centre for Low Impact Building’s (CLIB) aims to be an academic and industry partner of choice in delivering real solutions to close the design versus in-use performance gap in the built environment. This PhD supports our research theme on owner and occupant responses, their perception of comfort and satisfaction, and consequently the energy and in-use performance of a building, including the well-being and productivity of occupants.

CLIB staff enjoy a vibrant environment of collaboration across academic disciplines, other universities, practioners and industry to ensure that our research has proven impact on the global challenge for sustainability of the built environment that includes human factors.

Successful Applicants

Successful applicants will have:
- A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the Project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average, or

- A Masters Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered as an equivalent. The Masters must have been attained with overall marks at merit level (60%). In addition, the dissertation or equivalent element in the Masters must also have been attained with a mark at merit level (60%).

- The potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a prescribed period of study

- Language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component).
