About This PhD Project

Project Description

Coventry University (CU) is inviting applications from suitably-qualified graduates for a fully-funded PhD studentship.

Additive manufacturing (AM) offers the capacity to produce near net shaped complex components. Apart from some of the most used materials for AM technology development, e.g. titanium, steels, Inconel, and AlSiMg, additive manufacturing of aluminium alloys using wire based process has recently gained attention from the industries and researchers.

High strength aluminium alloys made by the wire + arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process will be the subject of study in this project, which have found applications in the aerospace and automotive sectors. However, AM process may induced defects, e.g. porosity, lack of fusion, and keyholes, which can affect the mechanical properties and structural integrity performance. For safety critical structural components, this must be investigated and criticality of defect levels must be set.

Aim is to investigate the effect of defects in WAAM processed aluminium alloys. Main objectives are to conduct experimental testing and computational modelling, to characterise the defect morphology, and to study the defect criticality and impact on fatigue strength of safety critical structures.

Training and Development

The successful candidate will receive comprehensive research training including technical, personal and professional skills.

All researchers at Coventry University (from PhD to Professor) are part of the Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability and Development, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.

Entry criteria for applicants to PhD

• A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average.

PLUS

the potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a 3.5 years

• a minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component)

Candidates should have the background in the following subject areas: Materials Engineering, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics.

An MSc in relevant subject area is desirable.

Candidates with research experience in fatigue analysis, fracture mechanics, numerical modelling of material failures are particularly encouraged to apply.
