Project Description

Applications are invited for a PhD project designing novel biomedical materials for immunology and cancer immunotherapy. The student will join an interdisciplinary team that are combining concepts from nanomaterials science, biomechanics and immunology to develop biomaterials that enhance the immune response to cancers and other diseases. We use an exceptionally broad range of biomaterials including hydrogels, gold and magnetic nanoparticles and graphene/nanocarbon based materials, with ultimate clinical targets including improving the functionality of anti-cancer drugs and developing an ideal ‘petri dish’ for growing anti-cancer immune cells (T cells) outside the body.

The interdisciplinary nature of the project makes it suitable for students from a range of science/engineering backgrounds, e.g. Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Bioengineering or Biochemistry. Expected start date October 2016.

Funding Notes

The selected applicant will need to compete for internal PhD funding at Imperial College (full fees and stipend, currently £16,057) hence a 1st Class or good 2:1 degree from a leading university is required. Due to funding conditions, only applicants who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start date can be considered.
