About the Project

Application details:
Reference number: ABCE20/SC2
Start date of studentship: 1 October 2020
Closing date of advert: 21 June 2020
Interview date: tbc

Supervisors:
Primary supervisor: Dr Simon Clubley
Secondary supervisor: tbc

This exciting project will focus on the dynamic response of buildings clad with protective panels when subject to high strain rate explosive loading. Importantly, this industry-sponsored research will extend the limited body of knowledge on resistance curves for large building structures subject to blast. This studentship offers a unique and privileged opportunity to investigate an area of considerable scientific interest and great industry value.

Full Project Detail:

This exciting project will focus on the dynamic response of buildings clad with protective panels when subject to high strain rate explosive loading. Research will focus on the dynamic response and load transmission of large panel arrays for a range of material types given variable end restraint conditions, variable angles of incidence and geometry. Strain energy dissipation, large material deformation and localised distortions will be of additional interest. Importantly, this industry-sponsored research will extend the limited body of knowledge on resistance curves for large building structures subject to blast loading using a full spectrum of analysis methods – incorporating both numerical simulation and world class experimental testing.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject; a background in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics or mathematics is particularly welcomed. A relevant master’s degree and/or employment experience will be an advantage.
