Advanced CFD methods for porous media flows (JS2UF2019)


Project Description

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to work on the development of modelling techniques, based on existing novel high resolution, massively parallel schemes with the immersed boundaries approach employed for simulation of flows in porous media. There are many applications of porous media modelling including our research into biomechanical design e.g. 3D printed bones, jet-based application of medicine substituting needle-based injection and in a wider context geophysical flow behaviour in reservoirs, relevant to petroleum and water industry. Due to the multidisciplinary character of the work, we anticipate that the student will have to receive training complementing their existing background. Extensive guidance will be provided. The project will also provide opportunities to acquire advanced parallel computing skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with collaborating scientists including our experimental team, industrial partners and numerical experts from the leading international laboratories. The student will be encouraged to engage with the collaborating partners, make presentations at review meetings, and to travel to international conferences and seminars. The research and developments will be multidisciplinary thus offering important transferable skills - an excellent background for diverse career paths.

Start date: 1 July, 1 October, 1 January, 1 April.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or a related subject. Programming and model developments experience and/or understanding of concepts of numerical methods, fluid dynamics, CFD will be beneficial. A Master’s degree and/or experience in a related area associated with the research will be an advantage.

Outstanding candidates (UK/EU/International) without funding will be considered for funding opportunities which may become available in the School.
