Advanced electric machine drives for wind and automotive applications

Project Description

The automotive, aerospace, offshore wind and manufacturing sectors are looking for much improved performance envelope electric machines and drives to underpin ambitions plans for market electrification. A large part of the required solutions will be underpinned by improved sensing, monitoring and control management techniques for variable speed drive systems to enable better understanding of the vicinity of machine operating points to design limits and associated operating point management; to achieve these much improved monitoring of key operational parameters is required.
A PhD studentship is available to undertake research into development of in-situ monitoring solutions for electrical machines and their integration into machine condition monitoring and drive control management routines. The research will explore the application of latest generation fibre optic sensing for variable speed drives, building on Dr Durovic’s group research track record, to enable improved monitoring network and drive management routine development.
You will be expected to undertake considerable experimental research activities in the Power Conversion laboratory at University of Manchester as well as modelling and analysis desk based research work. You will be embedded in a friendly team of other PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. The research will be closely linked with the ongoing multimillion pound EPSRC funded HOME Offshore project (see project website on http://homeoffshore.org/ )providing further opportunities for growth and networking.

Funding Notes

This is a fully funded Studentship (fees and stipend), subject to EPSRC requirements, for eligibility see: View Website. Due to funding restrictions, the full studentship is only available to students from the UK or EU who have been normally resident in the UK for at least 3 years. The Studentship is available for 3.5 years, covering full tuition fees and a stipend

References

Applicants should be educated to at least 1st Class/2:1 (or UK equivalent) BEng (Hons) level and will have a strong numerate, typically 1st, degree in engineering (electrical/electronic), mathematics or physics. The applicants should ideally have a background in/knowledge of electric motors and drives and their control. Experimental and modelling work experience is also an advantage.
