About the Project

Applications are invited for fully funded PhD studentship in the area of experimental aerodynamics within the Propulsion Engineering Centre at Cranfield University.

Novel aircraft architectures require a much closer coupling between the engine and the airframe. To achieve this, detailed knowledge on the aerodynamic interactions between fans and air induction systems is needed. Measuring these complex aerodynamics with high spatial and temporal resolution is feasible via for example the application on non-intrusive optical methods but the application of such techniques is hindered by the instrumentation integration requirements and more importantly by the complexity of the measurement domain. This doctoral activity aims to address these challenges by using state of the arm flow measurement technologies to visualise and quantify the unsteady flow characteristics at the interface between the airframe and the aero-engine. The aim of the work will be to provide novel measurement techniques which will subsequently be used for industrial testing as part of engine development and certification programmes.

The outcomes of the work will have an inherent impact on current engine development programmes and will provide notable advancements in our current knowledge about aero-engine design and integration.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in mechanical or aerospace engineering or related area. Knowledge of compressible flow aerodynamics would be a distinct advantage.
