Baker Hughes GE are the world’s first and only fullstream Oil & Gas company, with the capability, portfolio, technology and the people to radically transform the oil and gas industry and deliver unparalleled improvement in industrial yield for their customers. Their well-established 35-acre Montrose manufacturing facility has recently secured £31M funding for an ambitious creation of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the design and manufacture of advanced subsea Oil & Gas equipment.
Advanced R&D focused on new technologies that reduce costs and lower the carbon footprint of oil and gas operations is a key enabler of this program - This Engineering Doctorate (EngD - Industrial PhD) will be a key part of this and focus on innovation in accuracy and speed of challenging High Value Manufacturing integrity inspection of future Oil & Gas industrial components.
Specifically, this EngD will investigate advanced ultrasonic imaging, signal processing, finite element modelling and critically the feedback link into design, manufacturability and structural integrity to maximise build efficiency and component quality. This project will focus on key challenging industrial market applications of in-process arc welding, corrosion resistant cladding and future materials and components.
The student will be based at the University of Strathclyde before relocating to the Baker Hughes GE Centre of Excellence in Montrose. The student will work alongside researchers and engineers developing enhanced manufacturing inspection and will have the opportunity to influence future High Value Manufacturing operations.
The post is supported by a bursary and fees (UK/EU student rate) provided by EPSRC, together with a generous top up by the sponsor company. This results in a tax-free stipend of just over £21,000pa.
