About the Project

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual who wishes to study the underlying phenomena governing the compatibility of alternative aviation fuel chemical compositions and elastomeric seals with particular focus on representative aromatic components. This work would entail a number of experimental methods, and the development of a range of analytical and numerical techniques with the ultimate goal of developing fuel chemistry dependent models of elastomer behaviour. This work is undertaken as part of the H2020 JETSCREEN proposal, a consortium of leading European Research Institutes conducting work on alternative aviation fuels.

We are offering an opportunity for a 3 year, fully funded PhD, starting in January 2018. This project would suit a candidate with a 1st or 2.1 Bachelor or Master degree in any of following: mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or chemistry. Experimental and numerical work combined with a knowledge of chemical kinetics are desirable but not essential. Relevant research background in organic chemistry and fuels is favourable. An interest in the development of sustainable aviation fuels is desirable.

The award covers the tuition fees for UK/European students and a stipend of £15,000+ per year tax free. International students are also eligible to apply, if the additional cost of the international tuition fees can be met by the applicant.
