About the Project

Post summary

Applications are invited to undertake a full-time or part-time MSc by Research in the Department of Nursing and Healthcare, School of Health Sciences (WIT), on the following project: ‘An examination of maternal continence management in the South East of Ireland’.

The South-East Community Health Care area of Ireland has four busy maternity units located in hospitals across the region. The Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit, South-East (HSE) are currently working with all maternity units in the region on the roll-out of the ‘Maternal Health And Maternal Morbidity in Ireland study (MAMMI), which is a longitudinal study led Trinity College Dublin and funded by the Health Research Board (HRB). The MAMMI study follows women through their pregnancy and for one year after the birth, to examine key health outcomes and experiences of women that used the maternity services. Notably, the MAMMI study has identified maternal continence as a salient issue that requires enhanced care pathways and attention nationally. This research seeks to build on the knowledge generated through the MAMMI study, by examining midwives and relevant healthcare providers understanding of continence care for women, and the supports required to enhance this aspect of maternal care. This research will seek to inform key healthcare and midwifery practice in the region and beyond.

This project is supported by the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit, South-East, the Health Service Executive through the CARE Collaboration initiative.
