About the Project

This project will develop new modelling approaches to change how biocatalysis is optimised for organic synthesis. The step-change will be the type of data that is used to create these models, and how that data is collected and used. This project will develop novel data collection approaches with continuous flow reactors, and use the data collected to generate predictive models related to enzyme activity. This exciting approach will transform the way biocatalysis is viewed and used by chemists, and give access to a vast toolbox of efficient catalysts that can deliver novel chemical entities.

In collaboration with industrial partners in Rasayan inc., the case study enzymes for this project will centre around nucleoside biocatalysis. These biocatalysts have seen a recent increase in use as isolated biocatalysts for the synthesis of nucleoside analogues, with numerous recent examples of these molecule being applied in pharmaceutical settings. You will receive training in chemical biology and organic synthesis, as well as flow biocatalysis (immobilisation, reactor design). You will also receive training in coding to be able to apply it to a range of machine learning techniques with Dr Nicholas Wright and other members of the Keele Data Science Network. Transferable skills such as reporting of results orally and in writing, time management, project planning and management will also be developed.

Qualifications: Applicants should have or expect a 2(i) honours degree (or an equivalent degree) in Chemistry. Any experience in synthetic organic chemistry/biocatalysis is a plus. There is a requirement for experience in coding. This will be trained, but would be beneficial to any applicant who possesses this already.

Contact for further information: For informal inquiries regarding the project please contact the academic leads, Dr Sebastian Cosgrove ([Email Address Removed]) or Dr Nicholas Wright ([Email Address Removed]) and include a CV.

Details of current research projects underway in the Cosgrove group can be found here: https://www.keele.ac.uk/scps/ourpeople/chemistry/sebastiancosgrove/#research-and-scholarship, and in the Wright group here: https://www.keele.ac.uk/scps/ourpeople/physicsandastrophysics/nickwright/#biography. Formal application (through the advertisement) must be submitted to be considered, where applicants should provide details of their qualifications, including a CV and a personal statement.

To be considered for the studentship you must submit a formal application to the University. Please quote FNS_SCDec 2022 on your application.
