Applications accepted all year round  Self-Funded PhD Students Only

About the Project

Ancient Chinese philosophical texts, such as the Mengzi, Mozi, Zhuangzi, and Xunzi, are increasingly being analysed using the resources of contemporary analytic philosophy and logic, opening up new questions and reconstructing the arguments for evaluation. Engaging analytically with ancient Chinese philosophy, in turn, also poses challenges for contemporary analytic philosophy and logic, allowing us to better appreciate some of its deepest assumptions and investigate their validity. This project will select key passages from ancient Chinese philosophical texts to analyse and critically evaluate, reconstructing the arguments as appropriate. The overall aim will be to encourage greater dialogue between Chinese and analytic philosophy.

Philosophical background required that includes both analytic philosophy (e.g. philosophy of language, logic, epistemology, metaphysics) and Chinese philosophy (at least one course). English language (native speaker, or minimum IELTS 7.0); Chinese language (native speaker, or intermediate +, plus willingness to learn, inc. ancient Chinese)

The minimum entrance requirement for admission to the PhD is a 2:1 (B-average) degree in an appropriate field, or equivalent. It is preferable that you also hold a Masters in the chosen area of study.
