Prof Nils Helge Schebb  No more applications being accepted  Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

PhD Student (Biology or Analytical Chemistry)

The current vacancy is part of the food chemistry group (http://www.schebb-web.de/). The group of Prof. Dr. Schebb investigates the effects of the diet on human physiology by means of chromatography/mass spectrometry (MS). The ongoing research is well documented in about 100 publications which can be found at research gate (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Nils_Schebb/publications)

or here (https://www.lebchem.uni-wuppertal.de/de/arbeitsgruppe-schebb/publications.html).

One PhD aims to develop and apply liquid new chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC) methods coupled to MS for the characterization and quantification of lipids and other cellular metabolites. Both targeted as well as non-targeted metabolomics are applied to evaluate the effects of diet food ingredients.

A second PhD project aims to aims to employ human primary cell culture of leucocytes (neutrophils, monocyte-derived macrophages) to evaluate the (anti)-inflammatory effects of food ingredients. Biological endpoints such as phagocytosis and cytokine release are correlated with the levels of lipids and other cellular metabolites.

In both projects a focus is set on the investigation of the biological role and fate of oxylipins and biological samples from humans and animals are analyzed AND in vitro as well as cell culture assays are employed as model systems.

The applicant should have a strong background in analytical chemistry or cell biology/biochemistry . Candidates with prior experience in GC-MS, LC-MS and/or activity testing in cell culture have a strong advantagee. A background in (organic) chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology will be accounted as well.

Good communication skills, both verbal and written in English, and a Master's Degree (or equivalent) obtained within the EU are a prerequisite. The candidate should be enthusiastic about research, interested in learning new skills and disciplines (such as biomedical questions), accept responsibility and enjoy working independently as well as in collaboration with other scientists.

Empolyoment: You will be employed according to TVL13 (50%) which is about in 2000 Euro resulting in 1500 Euro after Tax including social insurance including full health insurance.

Research environment

The researcher will be embedded into the research group of Prof. Dr. Nils Helge Schebb at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The group and the project are funded by grants of German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The research is based on close collaborations within the University of Wuppertal as well as different medical schools in Germany.

Please address your application with the usual documents including a cover letter (demonstrating your experience/interests in the project and the group, mentioning if you are applying for the biological or the analytical PhD project), curriculum vitae, your most recent certificates and a one-page description of your previous scientific work.
