Analysis of clinical trial and electronic health record data in advanced breast cancer
The project will involve the utilisation of clinical prediction modelling, disease progression modelling, machine learning and deep learning techniques to develop prognostic tools that allow the presentation of personalised likelihoods of response and adverse effects to medicines used in advanced breast cancer treatment. Such information allows informed decisions to be made. This is particularly important in advanced breast cancers where there are significant consequences to the variability in adverse effect incidences and response to treatments.
This project involves the development of prognostic tools via the analysis of “big data” sourced from clinical trials or from data registries. At present the group has access to individual-patient data (demographic, laboratory and tumour data) from over 10,000 advanced breast cancer patients.
Prospective students require relevant experience and interest in clinical epidemiology, biostatics or pharmacometrics. Additionally, students require good communication skills, and have an interest in improving cancer care.
The project will be conducted at the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer (FCIC) which is a partnership between Flinders University and Flinders Medical Centre. This partnership brings together oncologists and researchers to foster collaboration in a multi-disciplinary environment. The following eligibility criteria apply to this scholarship:
• The PhD must be undertaken on a full-time basis.
• Applicants must have a biostatistics / pharmacometrics background. Proficiency with the R programming language or similar is required.
• Applicant must have good verbal and written communication skills.
• Applicants must already have been awarded a first-class honours degree or hold equivalent qualifications or relevant and substantial research experience in an appropriate sector.
Students need to obtain a scholarship that will cover their own living expenses and tuition fees, but we are more than happy to support students in applying for available funding.
