Supervisory Team: Dr Ysobel Baker and Professor Tim Fenton
Are you passionate about bridging chemistry and biology to address important biomedical challenges? We are offering a fully-funded PhD position that focuses on the design and synthesis of selective inhibitors targeting the APOBEC3 family of enzymes which are key players in both antiviral defence and cancer mutagenesis.
About the Project
APOBEC3 enzymes are vital for protecting us against viral infections, yet their off-target gene editing is a major driver of somatic mutations in cancers and viral mutagenesis. In this project, we will design and synthesise novel nucleic acid-based inhibitors to dissect the role of APOBEC3 in tumour evolution and drug resistance, with the aim of providing promising leads for future cancer therapeutics.
We are looking for a student who is excited to work at the interface between chemistry and biology, with a background in chemistry or biochemistry. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience (or a keen willingness to learn) in organic synthesis, enzymology, or molecular biology techniques, and have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
We will provide a multidisciplinary, collaborative research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities. You will also have the option to attend relevant international conferences and training events.
If you have a general question about the application process please email our doctoral college (feps-pgr-apply@soton.ac.uk). For an initial conversation about the project, please email Dr Ysobel Baker (Y.R.Baker@soton.ac.uk).
This project provides an excellent opportunity to receive training in nucleic acid chemistry and a range of chemical biology techniques, including protein expression and purification, human cell culture, biochemical and cell-based assays to measure APOBEC3 enzyme activity and biological function.
Entry Requirements: Applicants must hold or expect a 1st class or 2:1 degree in chemistry or biochemistry.
Fees and Funding: This studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years and includes a tax-free annual stipend (currently £19,237) and fees (currently £4,786) at the UK home rate. EU and Horizon Europe students are eligible for scholarships. Funding for other international applicants is very limited and highly competitive. Overseas students who have secured or are seeking external funding are welcome to apply.
