Project Description

Fossil based mineral oils are widely used as insulation and coolant in high voltage power equipment. Ever think about using your cooking oils as an alternative? These cooking oils, e.g. rapeseed oils, sunflower oils have higher biodegradability and fire points than the mineral oils, which help making greener and safer high voltage equipment.

However one of the technical challenges is to understand the breakdown phenomena in the alternative oils. This project is aimed to build a model to simulate the breakdown phenomena based on large experimental data.

Funding Notes

Funding covers tuition fees and annual maintenance payments of £17,500. Students with a first class/2.1 degree (or equivalent) with a background in engineering and physical sciences and Humanities, are encouraged to apply.

Applications will be reviewed as they are received until a candidate is selected; therefore candidates are encouraged to apply early.

UK / EU eligible candidates only (EU residents who have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years)
