Project description

Applied Superconductivity: The group is a world leader in the enabling cryogenic engineering of high current superconducting applications and is currently engaged in a multimillion-pound project for providing the novel cryogenic components for the 350kA Superconducting cable to be installed in the High Luminosity Upgrade of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The group has built two 100kW-class HTS generators in the past and is working on novel concepts and cryogenic solutions for superconducting generator/motor for future all-electrical aircrafts. The characterisation and optimal design of superconducting coil windings has been a long-established research area of the group with worlding leading expertise in ac losses and quench propagation. The capabilities within the group have been enhanced by recent collaboration with Oxford Instruments to demonstrate the first 20T + HTS superconducting magnetic system in the world and the development a 10T test bed to continue to study future superconducting wire/tape/coil innovations.

Cryogenic Engineering: The group has a wide range of activities encompassing both research and enterprise in cryogenic design; studying thermo-mechanical testing of materials and structures, cutting-edge thermal insulation materials and technologies, and integrating both thermal and mechanical solutions into larger novel systems. It has ongoing collaborations with multinationals such BP and Shell and classification societies such as Lloyds Register investigating cryogenic new fluid transfer equipment for LNG and future liquid hydrogen transport, storage and distribution systems. The group use a diverse range of facilities to extract high fidelity data for research and industry, by adapting the setup of standard mechanical test machines to couple bespoke cooling systems (i.e. deploying dry cryocoolers technology or conditioned gas transfer syphons), and installing a broad range of compatible instrumentation (i.e. thermometers, pressure transducers and strain gauges and imaging equipment such as DIC) to record and analyse complex interactions.

Entry Requirements
A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 August 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,285 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
