Dundalk Institute of Technology - Centre for Freshwater and Environmental Research
Project Description
Digital technologies, including smartphone applications (‘Apps’), have the potential to provide new ways of engaging young people in science while fostering environmental stewardship. Environmental Education (EE) programmes must adapt themselves to the changing needs of society and incorporate emerging technologies. This project will focus on the benefits and potential of incorporating a targeted mobile App (AquaInvert) into the H2O Heroes EE programme which will link primary school aged students to science through involvement in a technology-enhanced citizen science initiative.
This study while demonstrating an App ‘AquaInvert’ that is easy and fun to use, will assess its contribution in apprenticing young learners into globally minded, young scientists. In addition, it will examine how the young learners themselves value their contribution to a long-term and reliable dataset that contributes to scientific research to help protect our water resources.
