About the Project

This project aims at implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods able to assist humans in engineering design. The process is that of prompt engineering, in which a user queries an AI system to produce generative examples of a structure (i.e., a space frame or a truss configuration) given a number of constraints. Then, the user can sieve across the samples to assess the technical practicability of the design. This concept can be applied to aircraft structural design.

A potential technology to achieve this goal is Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), which embed geometric properties into typical deep learning architectures. These have been successfully applied to solve structural problems in other domains, such as protein folding.

The PhD researcher will work within a dynamic and interdisciplinary research group, with other members studying various applications of AI to engineering in the Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering Department at Loughborough University, and benefit from an extensive range of experimental and high-performance computing facilities for their research, including an AI workstation and access to the Lovelace HP cluster.

Funding Notes

UK fee
£4,596 full-time degree per annum
International fee
£25,100 full-time degree per annum
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
