About the Project
The watersheds of small mountainous rivers (SMRs) occupy only a minor portion of the global land area, but the contribution of sediment by these rivers is comparable to that of the 25 largest rivers. This is attributed to the frequent occurrence of episodic events (earthquakes, storms, and floods), which also have a great social impact, on SMR-drained regions. Most rivers in Taiwan belong to SMRs; hence, the land-to-sea transport processes associated with flood events become a focus of the earth science community. Previous work investigated the sources and transport of matter in watersheds or in the mesopelagic zone, with little attention paid to the alteration of flood-mobilized matter in nearshore and shelf areas. This three-year project aims at studying the water column and sediment at the mouth of an SMR and its adjacent shelf right after flood events. We will combine hydrodynamic, hydrographic, chemical, and sedimentological approaches to examine the fates and effects of flood-transported matter on the nearshore environment and ecosystem. Applicants are invited to join the project, starting in summer 2022.
