Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

Project Description

Seismic deformation demands are localized in areas of stiffness discontinuity, such as in soft-storeys of frame structures. This damage pattern is mitigated using strengthening schemes that include addition of stiffness in the structure so as to limit the magnitude of drift demands. This project aims to assess the use of masonry infills for the seismic upgrading of substandard reinforced concrete buildings. The in-plane and out-of-plane behaviour of the infill walls and their interaction with the load-bearing structure during response to seismic excitation will be assessed with the use of advanced computational models. Experimental work will be carried out to verify the findings of the analytical work.

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in Civil Engineering. An MSc in Structural Engineering is required. Experience on structural engineering analysis software and laboratory testing would be advantageous.

If English is not candidate’s first language, he/she must provide evidence that he/she meets the University’s minimum English Language requirements.

How to apply:

Informal contact can be sent to Dr Georgia Thermou () before submitting an online application. Please send a cover letter and a copy of your CV with your up to date relevant experience.

Online application can be made via http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/pgstudy/how-to-apply/how-to-apply.aspx. Please quote the studentship reference and Dr Georgia Thermou.

When applying for this studentship, please include the reference number (beginning ENG) within the personal statement section of the application. This will help in ensuring your application is sent directly to the academic advertising the studentship.

Closing date: open until filled.
