About the Project

A fully-funded DPhil Studentship is available to work on an exciting project on new perovskite solar cell materials using state-of-the-art computational techniques in the research group of Professor Saiful Islam at the University of Oxford.

Metal halide perovskites are generating enormous excitement for their use in low-cost and high-performance solar cell devices. These materials are based on the prototype compound methylammonium lead iodide (termed MAPI), and have shown an unprecedented rise in power conversion efficiencies from 3% to more than 25% within 10 years.

The DPhil project will use atomistic modelling techniques (DFT and molecular dynamics) to investigate the structural, electronic, ion migration and surface properties of perovskite solar cell materials; these systems include lead-iodide compounds, as well as novel tin-based and 2D halide perovskites.

This project will also have links to complementary experimental studies in the research groups of Professors Henry Snaith and Laura Herz (both in Oxford Physics) and to technological research at Oxford-PV.

Research in the Oxford group of Prof Saiful Islam encompasses the application and development of materials modelling to study new materials for photovoltaics and batteries (website for details and publications: https://www.materials.ox.ac.uk/peoplepages/islam.html)

The studentship is tenable from October 2023 and candidates should have (or expect to obtain) a good honours degree in Chemistry, Materials, Physics or related discipline – please see our DPhil in Materials Entry Requirements for further information. Previous experience in computational modelling would be an advantage, but not essential.

This EPSRC-funded 3.5 year DPhil in Materials DTP studentship will provide course fees and a stipend of at least £17,668 per year (pro-rata for the final six-months).

Candidates will be considered in the November 2022 admissions field which has an application deadline of 11 November 2022 and, if the studentship is unfilled, in the January 2023 admissions field which has an application deadline of 20 January 2023.

Information on fee status can be found at http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/fees-and-funding/fees-and-other-charges

Funding Notes

Applicants with Home or Overseas fees status are eligible to apply. However, applicants with overseas fees status should note our ability to offer a studentship to a candidate with this fee status is restricted by the EPSRC stipulation that no more than 30% of students funded by a specific EPSRC DTP training grant held by an institution may be of overseas fees status. For information on the consequences of this restriction please see https://www.materials.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate/newprojects.html#/ for an extended version of the present advert.
