Project Description

The proposed research will work alongside a newly-funded AHRC research project within the School of Computing Science and Digital Media. This project, entitled: “Augmented Fashion: Immersive Interactions for Sustainable Heritage in Fashion and Textiles”, seeks to explore ways to educate the consumer about the sustainability, craftsmanship, heritage and value of traditional fashion and textile products, using a variety of media such as immersive and other HCI technologies. The UK and Chinese research – industry teams will establish and enhance a long-term collaboration to discuss the challenges and threats to creative fashion and textiles and ideas on how immersive experience and HCI techniques could be used to represent and preserve the history and heritage of traditional fashion and textile products, and transfer them into modern-style design to meet the current and future fashion trends. This research project explores the challenges in capturing, developing, disseminating and promoting provenance, heritage, craftsmanship and the value of slow fashion and textile products in contemporary society. The PhD candidate will be required to investigate Computer Graphics techniques and technologies and Human Computer Interaction practice, identifying novel applications in fashion and textiles. The general research question is how digital technologies especially Immersive Technology, HCI could be utilized to enhance effective communications and culture transmissions in the fashion and textile industry. We will explore the research challenges that exist in the immersive fashion show, interactive fashion design & shopping experiences and creative online tools, etc. in the chosen topic.

The student will work on computational algorithms and methods to visualize and analysis 3D data and explore frontier digital technologies to record, process and present digital data of the sustainable preservation of tangible and intangible Cultural Heritage. The detailed project plan will be discussed once the AHRC project has started. The HCI (Human Computer Interaction) framework designed and developed on project will be a platform for gaining and sharing knowledge of relevant users.

The selected PhD student would have a focus on the development of mechanisms to support the communication, with at least part of the research analysis focused on user-perception and usability both in computer science and fashion & textile.
