Project Description

We are looking for an outstanding candidate to join the cutting-edge robotics research carried on at the Institute of Design, Robotics and Optimisation (iDRO) at the University of Leeds. You will work in a world class robotic research environment supported by £1M+ of robotic hardware and complemented with ANYmal robot and several Laikago quadrupedal robots.

You will contribute to advance understanding in one or more of following research areas within the iDRO: Locomotion of legged mobile robots including research into walking robots, exoskeletons, and general fast multi-link robotic systems. In particular, you will perform research to embed autonomous motor skills in legged robot while it is dynamically interacting with realistic environments. Research effort will be spared to developments and integrations of conventional motion planning/control algorithms, as well as state-of-art machine learning techniques, to achieve creature comparable motion capabilities of legged robots.

The candidate will be responsible for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of legged whole-body motion algorithms, in physically simulations and on the real quadruped robots within the university. Other activities will include analyzing and summarizing research results into high-quality peer-reviewed scientific publications, traveling for research meetings with our collaborators and for presenting research results at conferences worldwide, participating in outreach activities to engage the broader community into science and engineering.

Funding Notes

Funding covers the cost of fees and provides a maintenance matching the Research Council UK rate (£15,009 for 2019/20 ). Funding duration is 3.5 years. UK and EU applicants will be eligible for a full award paying tuition fees and maintenance.
