About the Project

An opportunity to apply for a funded full-time PhD in the College of College of Arts, Technology and Environment, UWE Bristol. The studentship will be funded by UWE Partnership studentship:

Ref 2324-OCT-CATE04

The expected start date of this studentship is 01 October 2023

The closing date for applications is 29 June 2023.

Studentship Details

The Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) have an exciting PhD post working on a project to develop real-time localization, obstacle avoidance and automatic path planning for mobile robots operating in dynamic environments, especially in industrial workshops and factories, in order to improve efficiency and reduce the negative impact of labour shortage for many industrial applications. This PhD studentship will focus on indoor localization, navigation, and obstacle avoidance for mobile robots by development of novel and better ways to detect the changes of the environment in real time. The update of path planning according to these environmental changes must meet the requirements of transportation tasks, with high precision and specified speed. The envisaged research will be demonstrated and evaluated in a challenging and dynamic environment to test whether the designed mobile robot can complete the specified tasks within the given time, such as goods transportation, under different types of task scenarios.

The PhD will involve working in the extensive facilities in BRL (see www.bristolroboticslab.com). BRL is located at our Frenchay campus and within walking distance of two train stations and bus stops, making UWE Frenchay Campus the ideal place to work for those wishing to commute to Bristol. UWE is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity to create an inclusive working environment. We believe this can be achieved through attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse range of staff from many different backgrounds who share our ambition to be a university recognised for the success and impact of our practice-oriented programmes; our strong industry networks and our inclusive global outlook.

Excellent candidates with engineering backgrounds and relevant skills are encouraged to apply.
