Mr A Bhangu  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)

About the Project

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD Studentship starting in September 2022.

The Academic Department of Surgery at the University of Birmingham is a thriving unit at the cutting edge of surgical research. We host the NIHR Global Surgery Unit, COVIDSurg, the UK multi-arm ROSSINI trials, the RCS Robotics Initiative, and a major translational laboratory programme.

This post is to take forward the outputs from the COVIDSurg portfolio that focused on sustainability, defined through capacity, training, and environment. We would like to appoint a clinical PhD fellow to do research into environmentally sustainable surgery. This will include validating current knowledge, performing new life cycle assessment, and identifying barriers and solutions to implementing global change. This will involve collaborative multi-disciplinary research, with publication to reflect this.

Ideal candidates will be medically qualified and willing to learn how to deliver fast and flexible research. They will be research leaders of the future, looking to build networks and learn how to move into leadership positions. Teamworking with colleagues across the UK and around the world will be central to this post.

Day to day supervision will be through Mr Aneel Bhangu, with full support and regular contact from a wide and diverse team. We have established a diverse and accepting team and will continue that ethos, encouraging applications from any background or gender.

A funding package (stipend, fees, and an appropriate clinical post) are in place. Self-funded overseas applicants are welcome to apply (please check the University fees before applying).
