Behaviour and Design of Natural Fibre Reinforced Composites

About the Project

This research will focus on the development of environmentally friendly fibre reinforced composites with improved physical and mechanical properties. Experimental investigations focusing on the microscopic behaviour and the mechanical characterization of the natural fibres and matrix will be carried out. Behaviour of scaled structural element made from the developed composite will be examined through laboratory experiments and numerical modelling. Finally, design recommendations and guidance for designers and engineers, to enable practical application of the research outcomes, will be developed.

Candidates should have (or expect to achieve) a UK honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering.

Funding Notes

This project is advertised in relation to the research areas of the discipline of Civil and Structural Engineering. The successful applicant will be expected to provide the funding for Tuition fees, living expenses and maintenance. Additional Research costs totalling £3,000 will also be required.
