About the Project

High strength steel is an increasingly popular material choice for civil engineering structures owing to its high performance and ability to reduce the overall material usage in a project. This project will build upon previous work done at Brunel and investigate the whole structure behaviour of frames made from high strength steel, in fire. This project will be most suitable for students interested in developing a fundamental understanding of the way that steel structures behave in a fire, using finite element analysis. You will be ambitious and committed to developing as an academic researcher.

Background/interest in structural fire engineering, and ABAQUS finite element modelling, are desirable. Relevant work experience is also useful (please provide sufficient details in your personal statement so that its relevance can be established). Applicants will have or be expected to receive a first or upper-second class honours degree in an Engineering discipline. A Postgraduate Masters degree is not required but may be an advantage. Experience in structural engineering, finite elements modelling, MATLAB, is desirable. knowledge of structures and finite element modelling is an advantage. In addition, he/she should be highly motivated, able to work in a team, collaborate with others and have good communication skills.

Funding Notes

Brunel offers a number of funding options to research students that help cover the cost of their tuition fees, contribute to living expenses or both. See more information here: https://www.brunel.ac.uk/research/Research-degrees/Research-degree-funding. The UK Government is also offering Doctoral Student Loans for eligible students, and there is some funding available through the Research Councils. Many of our international students benefit from funding provided by their governments or employers. Brunel alumni enjoy tuition fee discounts of 15%.
