About the Project

Project detail:

3D bioengineered skeletal muscle models can be used as experimental test beds, with published work recreating exercise, injury and regeneration. Using bioengineered tissues to model these conditions can provide a high-throughput platform from which potential new therapies or interventions can be developed, without the requirement to utilise animals in the study, allowing new understanding of human biology.

Specifically, this 3-year project will model the mechanisms of skeletal muscle injury and regeneration, employing complex multi-cellular bioengineered models to better understand how musculoskeletal injury occurs, and to develop new approaches to prevent, minimise and overcome the problems associated with trauma. The project will work alongside a team of researchers at Loughborough University, as well as colleagues from the University of Nottingham, and in collaboration with the UK military (DSTL) to deliver on a ~£1M project funded by the NC3Rs.

Entry requirements:

Potential applicants should have at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in sport and exercise science, human physiology, biochemistry or a related subject. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the above areas will be an advantage.

English language requirements:

Applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements. Further details are available on the International website (http://www.lboro.ac.uk/international/applicants/english/).
