Biofilm Engineering for Healthcare Applications


Project Description

Biofilms are communities of microorganisms bound to surfaces by a layer of glue-like extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). They can be found virtually everywhere, from water pipes and food packaging to medical devices and human tissues. The formation of biofilms is a complex process influenced by many factors. Despite recent advances in our understanding of biofilm formation, removal of unwanted biofilms still represents an enormous challenge both for industry and in healthcare applications. Bacteria growing in biofilms are protected from the external environment by the polymeric matrix making them difficult to eradicate.

Here at the University of Sheffield, a team of researchers recently established a new facility equipped with state of the art equipment to find new ways of fighting biofilm formation. For more information, please see our website:

Join our team and engineer new strategies to combat harmful biofilms! Current project areas include investigation of biofilms in medical-device related infections. We are also developing modelling capabilities with particular interest in formation of biofilms in flow environments, for example in catheters.

Funding Notes

Suitable candidates will either have, or be expected to obtain, a 1st degree in microbiology, chemistry/ chemical engineering subject. All candidates should be prepared to work as part of an interdisciplinary team and in collaboration with public organisations/ industry.

If English is not your first language then you must have International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) average of 6.5 or above with at least 6.0 in each component.
