About the Project

In pancreatic cancer (PC) the impact of surgery, chemotherapy and other novel therapeutic strategies on clinical outcomes has been limited to date; the five-year survival remains at ~5% with an annual disease-specific mortality that approaches the rising incidence. PC is the 4th highest cause of cancer-related death in Europe where ~75% of patients die within one year of diagnosis. The aim of this study is to develop state-of-the-art FTIR and Raman spectroscopy and machine learning methods for the investigation of cyst fluids and bloods of patients with pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) for both diagnostic and prognostic purposes. The project will involve development of laboratory methodologies, hyperspectral imaging approaches and machine learning infrastructure.

The project is part of a collaboration with Prof. Olivier Piot, Université de Reims Champagne-Ardennes (URCA) and Dr. Stephen Maher, Department of Surgery, TCD. As part of the project the student will spend half of their time at Prof. Piot’s laboratory in URCA and half of their time at the laboratory of Dr. Meade at TU Dublin.
