About the Project

The Centre for Social Justice and Global Responsibility at London South Bank University (LSBU) offers a vibrant and dynamic research environment. Our research draws together research, knowledge exchange and professional practice aimed at challenging injustices and inequalities in the UK and around the world. Our express intention is to encourage social change through disruption and scholarship which will impact on local and global public and social policy. We are looking to recruit two creative enthusiastic students, committed to driving change, to undertake a PhD with us.

Each PhD scholarship offers a tax-free maintenance allowance of £15,000 pa and covers tuition fees for three years of full-time PhD study. Successful applicants are expected to register for the PhD by research and will have opportunities to be involved in teaching. There will be support to publish journal articles and to disseminate research at national and international conferences.
The scholarships take effect from September 2020.

The Project
At LSBU we are at a defining moment for collective action on issues relating to participation of young people and other learners from our local community. Students coming to university from LSBU’s ‘family’ of institutions are predominantly BAME young people and adult learners emerging as future leaders and change makers. This PhD study will explore perspectives of local students so that their experience can shape what LSBU will offer to learners of the future. The project will be conducted as Action Research so that students who are the key informants will be key determinants of the project and of subsequent change.

Candidates should hold a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate academic discipline which provides skill sets relevant to the PhD research project (for example, education; social science; social research methods; psychology, etc).
