About the Project

The consequences of Covid-19 and the UK government’s restrictions to manage the pandemic will be significant and long-lasting. The UK economy contracted by 20% in 2020 and the projected economic downturn is expected to rival the Great Depression. Unemployment has risen dramatically and government intervention in the economy has been significant. The pandemic also exacerbated existing health inequalities and disparities in regional and local service provision. The government has already coined the slogan ‘build back better’ to signify its intention to overcome the pandemic and both long-standing and newly formed regional inequalities in health, education, employment and opportunity. This proposed research will focus on the regional inequalities facing the North East and how the pandemic and government restrictions have affected those disparities. If the Covid-19 recovery is to be successful, it is essential to understand the scale and depth of regional inequality. You are encouraged to focus on one aspect of public policy and investigate in light of the pandemic.
