Building modern export learning processes

Project Description

The successful candidate will be enrolled on the PhD in Business and Management at Cardiff Business School.

In the current climate of protectionism of country markets, exporting firms need all the advantages they can get. Historically, it fell upon the export manager to go to export markets, learn, return, and pass on his/her learning. Such a process was heavily reliant on, and varied a lot across, export managers. The modern export business is more sophisticated, due to the use of technologies that help to build knowledge repositories. Still, most exporting firms are not good at experiential learning. This study looks to understand how knowledge is accessed and reused within exporting firms. It will involve a mixed-methods approach to uncover what is happening in exemplar case studies and, then, arrive at generalizable insights using quantitative methods.

Applicant profile:
The ideal candidate has a specialist Masters-level degree in Business, Management, Marketing or related subjects from an internationally renowned University. Applicants with a particularly strong first degree will also be considered. The ideal applicant has the motivation and ability to develop links with exporting firms in the UK and/or other markets. He/she will be required to review the literature; conduct fieldwork in multiple firms; conduct mixed-method research (building skills in qualitative and quantitative methods); and develop practical implications from the study findings that can help exporting businesses to better manage their knowledge.
